How to Maximise Small Kitchen Spaces

Sarah Mitchell·20 January 2024·6 min read

A small kitchen does not mean a compromised kitchen. At CraftStone, we have designed hundreds of compact kitchens across Milton Keynes, and we know that clever design can make any space feel spacious and functional.

Go Handleless

Handleless cabinets with J-pull or push-to-open mechanisms create clean, uninterrupted lines that make a small kitchen feel less cluttered. The absence of protruding handles also means you can navigate tight spaces more comfortably.

Light Colours and Reflective Surfaces

Light-coloured cabinetry and glossy finishes reflect light around the room, creating an illusion of space. Pair white or light grey cabinets with under-cabinet LED lighting to maximise the brightness. Glass splashbacks also help bounce light around the room.

Vertical Storage

When floor space is limited, think vertically. Full-height cabinets, wall-mounted open shelving, and tall pull-out larder units make use of every available inch. Magnetic knife strips and wall-mounted pot racks free up valuable drawer and cupboard space.

Multi-functional Islands

Even small kitchens can benefit from an island — if it is designed correctly. A compact island with built-in storage, an overhang for seating, and an integrated hob can replace the need for a separate dining table and additional counter space.

Smart Appliance Choices

Compact appliances designed for smaller kitchens have improved dramatically. Combination microwave ovens, slimline dishwashers, and two-zone induction hobs deliver full performance in a reduced footprint. Integrated appliances behind cabinet doors maintain the streamlined look.
